A day to remember for Capenhurst
CAPENHURST had a day to remember in December, when the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) Chairman, Sir Anthony Cleaver, and Chief Executive, Dr Ian Roxburgh, made a special trip to the site.
The day started by meeting the NDA site team at Capenhurst where Dr Roxburgh met Amanda Collier and Dave Rushton, who outlined some of the specific challenges facing the NDA at Capenhurst.
Dr Roxburgh then went on to meet Andrew Miller, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, and local trade unions officials, Dave Upton and Terry Grundy, to discuss a number of local and national issues including the Industry Wide Pensions Scheme (IWPS). Dr Roxburgh stressed that the NDA wanted to continue to work in partnership with the unions in developing the IWPS and the next 3 months were critical in terms of getting feedback on the draft proposals as early as possible.
Capenhurst head of site, Phil Malem, head of uranic storage, Stewart Booth and Andy Oldham, NDA site programme manager, received valuable feedback on the current lifecycle baseline from the visitors, who commented how impressed they were with the ‘close working relationship between the NDA and the British Nuclear Group team’.
Over lunch, the group met with local stakeholders, before looking at the Enriched Uranium Decommissioning project where they were taken through the waste management process
In summing up the day Dr Roxburgh said he ‘liked the jointly generated thinking’ and ‘the NDA and British Nuclear Group teams at Capenhurst should continue to keep up the challenge to the plan.’ Sir Anthony added: The energy levels at the site were infectious and the key will be keeping up the momentum over the coming months’
Andy concluded by saying: “Capenhurst’s profile continues to rise in the NDA’s portfolio. There are some fantastic people at Capenhurst with a wealth of Uranic decommissioning experience and our aim is to be the first UK site to complete decommissioning.”
