Record safety performance at Sellafield

British Nuclear Group has hit a major safety milestone at a plant it manages on the Sellafield site, passing 13 years without a lost time accident.

The achievement was made in PCM Storage where the team is responsible for managing the safe storage of material generated from a range of decommissioning projects.

The material is created when items have been in contact with plutonium and have become contaminated, such as redundant pieces of plant such as filters, glove boxes or personal protective equipment. PCM is generated as a result of many of the activities carried out on the Sellafield site and its removal and storage is an essential part of continuing safe operations.

Jenifer Davies, Head of PCM Delivery for Waste, commended her team by saying: “The difficult work carried out daily by these guys is hands on and very labour intensive. It is a tribute to the team and the professional way they conduct their operations that they have achieved such a significant milestone.”

Alongside achieving this record, the team has been able to maintain an extremely high level of productivity. The rate at which the team has processed the PCM from across the site has sped up a number decommissioning and clean-up projects.

In recent months several Licence Instruments, legally binding requirements to complete programmes of work, have been completed or significantly progressed by emptying decommissioning facilities and other operational plant of the radioactive material.
