Environmental standards at Capenhurst earn new ISO 14001

British Nuclear Group operations at Capenhurst has been awarded the 2004 international system standard for environmental management systems, an impressive seven months ahead of the deadline.

The site, which went through a successful recertification of their environmental systems to 14001: 1996 in February 2005, was duly certified to the 2004 status on 10 August after a special surveillance visit took place.

ISO, the international system standard for environmental management systems, is a measure and control of system standards applied to operations that minimise the impact of these two environments.

The current standard became effective in November 2004 and organisations have until May 2006 to rectify their systems to the new standard from the original 1996 standard.

Such was the advanced status of the systems at Capenhurst they simultaneously went through a formal transition check list with the LRQA and completed 85 per cent of the new revised 2004 requirements. It is incumbent on all British Nuclear Group sites to maintain their EMS’s to 14001 and is an expectation from the Nuclear Decommissioning authority as a customer.

Ray Atherton, the sites Environmental / Waste Manager said: “This is another significant milestone the site has achieved and demonstrates our commitment to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority that we effectively manage all our environmental aspects to the desired standards.”
