British Nuclear Group awards ?118m contract

British Nuclear Group has just awarded a £118 million contract to support services and construction company Carillion plc. The contract is to complete the phase two work of the Sellafield Product and Residue Store (SPRS) at Sellafield. This contract is the first major construction contract to be let since the formation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, for whom British Nuclear Group now manages and operates the Sellafield site.

The SPRS is necessary for Sellafield in order to maintain long-term remediation capability. One of the key purposes of the store is to accommodate materials already at Sellafield which need to be retrieved from older facilities, repackaged and placed in a modern facility. It will receive materials recovered from historic fuel manufacturing buildings that are now being decommissioned. The building will also supplement the product storage capabilities of the Thorp reprocessing plant and the Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP).

Tom Gilroy, SPRS Project Manager said: “This is a very important project for the Sellafield site. The store will be built to exacting standards and will afford an enhanced level of protection and security for nuclear materials.”

“I am confident that Carillion will deliver a quality building service. I understand they are currently in the process of mobilising a capable workforce in order to successfully carry out the contract and believe many of the required skills will be found locally.”

The first phase of the SPRS was to construct the store base slab to support the store which was completed in June and involved pouring 10,000 M3 of concrete. The second phase will be completed within a 154 week programme which includes inactive commissioning. Following this active commissioning will commence marking the start of operations.
