Chemistry at work event

A two-day event organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry at the Lakes College in Lillyhall, West Cumbria attracted 400 children from local secondary schools.
There were five presentations on each of the two days giving the children the opportunity to learn how different companies use chemistry at work.

British Nuclear Group supported the event providing two speakers from the analytical laboratory on Sellafield site. In the presentation, the speakers talked about their education and training and the kind of work they carry out at the laboratory on site.

Other companies supporting the event were Cumbria Pyromania, a manufacturer of fireworks, Jennings Brewery talking about the processes used to make beer, GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals and the Cumbria Fire Service demonstrating chip pan fires and why they continue to burn and how to put them out.

Connexions were on hand for practical careers advice.
