North West Newspaper Awards 2009

The deadline to enter this year’s North West Newspaper Awards has been extended to Tuesday 19 May, meaning that there is still time to be in with a chance of winning a slice of the £5,000 prize money.

The awards, sponsored by Sellafield Ltd in association with the North West region of the Society of Editors, are given in recognition of the best journalists and newspapers throughout Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cumbria in the following categories:

News Reporter of the Year
Feature Writer of the Year
Sports Reporter of the Year
Photographer of the Year
Young Journalist of the Year
Daily Newspaper of the Year
Weekly Newspaper of the Year
Newspaper of the Year (circ up to 20,000) New category this year
Daily Newspaper Website of the Year
Weekly Newspaper Website of the Year

Winners receive £700 in the individual categories and the two runners-up £150 each. Trophies will be awarded to the Newspaper and Websites categories.

Sellafield Ltd’s new Stakeholder Relations Director Iain Irving said: “I am delighted that we are able to continue with our support for the North West Newspaper Awards.

“I know that they were held in high regard by my predecessors, and my colleagues tell me that the standard is always very high – I’m sure this year will be no different.

“The new category has been introduced because we wanted to provide a level playing field so that everyone had a fairer chance of winning something.”

All entries will be judged by an independent panel on Wednesday 20 May 2009 and the shortlist will be announced shortly afterwards. There will be three nominees in each category who will be invited to a special presentation luncheon in Chester on Friday 19 June 2009 where the prizes will be awarded.
