As the focus of Sellafield's activities switches from an operating site to greater emphasis on the decommissioning and clean-up of the site, the possible end-uses and end-state of the site will come under greater scrutiny. It is essential that our stakeholders have the necessary information on the merits and constraints of the various strategic and technical options available and they are able to provide informed views on the long term remediation of the site.
A stakeholder plan has been prepared in accordance with company policy and in accordance with Safegrounds guidance -web link safegrounds. The plan will be updated as required to reflect any changes in stakeholder needs. The principal stakeholder body in Cumbria is the West Cumbria Site Stakeholder Group. (WCSSG) which comprises representatives from various local bodies, eg political, social, regulatory, media, NGO's etc. This is the main forum for the scrutiny of activities on site and any major decisions which require stakeholder input will be channelled through the WCSSG. In addition, the Contaminated Land Team provide regular updates to the EH&S Sub Group.
It is important to ensure that stakeholders have information on current contaminated ground and groundwater management and input into future decisions on the management and remediation of the site. A stakeholder plan has been formulated taking into account company guidance and policy as well as SAFEGROUNDS guidance (SAFEGROUNDS website).
The WCSSG is an independent body whose role is to provide public scrutiny of the nuclear industry in West Cumbria by providing an active, two-way channel of communication between the site operators, the NDA and local stakeholders. Their website address is www.wcssg.co.uk.
