Sellafield workers get ready to take on ‘Clive’s Cumbrian Way’

A group of cyclists including several Sellafield workers are getting ready to embark on 260 mile cycle ride to raise money for Children’s charity Make-A-Wish foundation.

However, as the event isn’t being held until 12th and 13th June, organisers Ray Patterson and Grant Law are calling on any other cyclists to take part.

The 260 mile cycle ride will be headed up by the Honister 92 Cyclists Club and will take riders around the county perimeter on what is commonly known as 'The Cumbrian Way'.

While the funds raised will go towards the Make-a-wish Foundation, the cycle ride will be in aid of friend and former Sellafield electrician Clive Jenkins, who recently lost his battle with motor neuron disease.

“Clive’s Cumbrian Way cycle event as we’ve termed it isn't a race, but rather a social ride that we really want everyone to enjoy” explains Grant, an engineer who works in Thorp.

“However don’t be fooled! It will be a very tough ride, even for the experienced cyclist, probably covering about 140 miles on the first day and around 120 on the second.”

The event has already attracted over 65 people, but the organisers say there are places for a few more.

"We have been overwhelmed by the level of interest in people wanting to take part in the event. However there are still a few places left for anyone wanting to sign up – food, drinks and accommodation will all be included in the joining fee" said Grant.

Speaking about the charity at the heart of the race, he added: "The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. At any given time, over 20,000 children in the UK are living with life-threatening conditions. I'm sure we can all agree a very worthy cause indeed."
