I have been studying chemistry at Manchester University for two years and I am just about to go into my final year. I felt it was important to get some experience in the workplace but, more importantly, to get an insight into the types of careers I could go into with my degree.
Sellafield is definitely the best place to do this, since they have a vast range of areas which offer technical support. During my placement I worked in a technical department, producing risk assessments for certain chemicals used by plant services and carried out my own project, based primarily in the labs. I think this was useful as I got to see both sides of what I could be doing – if anything, it has helped me to decide what I want to do in the future, which I think is important at this stage of my life.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Sellafield for any type of placement. The people you meet are very friendly and accommodating – plus there is a very good social network for the students and graduates!
