A very humbling experience

Posted by: Tom Luke on 15 February 2008

Thursday 14th, taken on trip to local Township (Squatter Camp), to show everyone just where the children come from. Saw mile after mile of small tin shacks, with roofs held on by large stones. No electric or gas, and water from local standpipe. Suddenly you would come upon a smartly built brick building - these were the people who had a paid job in the city, but couldn't afford to live there, so they built a better home within the camp. It was all very humbling, and made each one of us so very much aware of how lucky we are back home.

At Lebone, we had a ceremony to mark the handing over of a new mini bus for transporting the children. We've actually been using it for a couple of weeks - this is the one we manage to cram about 20 kids at a time - but today was the official handing over, when the donors were able to see for themselves what the bus would be used for, as well as gain a little publicity too.

Bought an English paper with last Saturday's results in, and was glad to see that Sunderland had won again. It even had Barrow's result in, which seems a bit weird, reading it over 5,000 miles away.

Friday we went to visit the home of one of the workers at Lebone, it was a small brick house they had saved for and built themselves, but inside it was a real palace, and we were made so welcome on our arrival. The people here may not have much in the way of money, but they more than make up for it with a warmth and friendliness that makes you feel at home.
