A sad day

Posted by: Tom Luke on 25 February 2008

Monday morning, sadness in the Nursery School, a little girl who had only started there last week died on Saturday. This is one of the sad realities of a place like Lebone, but it still affects everyone deeply whenever a child is lost.

Heard a nice story today about one of the older boys, a 13 year-old named Thabo. He used to live alone with his elderly grandmother in one of the shacks on the squatter camp. They were very poor, and he often went without food, so one day he just hopped on the school bus returning to Lebone, and announced that he was booking himself in. After consultations with grandma, he was admitted to Lebone, and has been here ever since, and has quickly become part of the family.

As part of our fund-raising for Lebone, we have asked people to sponsor a child there. We ask them to pay a minimum of 5 pounds per month, and in return they get a photograph of one of the children, plus their date of birth. We then encourage the sponsors to send their child a card at Christmas or on their birthday. It is lovely to be able to go over each year and take an updated photo for the sponsors, and let them know how their child is progressing, and in return it is something very special for the children to know that they have someone many miles away who cares for them.

Wednesday afternoon the server went down, meaning we are unable to use the computer at Lebone, and to date it has not been fixed, so I have had to ask someone if I could use their home pc. Hopefully it will be repaired soon, but we are experiencing what is meant by 'Africa Time.'
