Environment
Our primary goal is to protect people and the environment.
We work hard to minimise the environmental impact of our operations across all areas of on-site activity. We engage with our stakeholders and seek the widest possible approval of how we manage our environmental responsibilities by recognising and addressing the concerns that people have.
It is our goal to continually improve global environmental performance by:
- Eliminating accidents and incidents
- Minimising waste and the use of natural resources
- Ensuring that all wastes are managed safely and with care for the environment
- Sharing and using best practice
- Meeting or exceeding current standards of environment, health and safety performance
Environmental Management System
Sellafield Ltd is also accredited to the International Environmental Management Standard ISO: 14001 through our environmental management system (EMS). Designed to drive continual improvement of our environmental performance while at the same time ensuring compliance with the wide range of UK environmental legislation, independent sitewide verification of our EMS against the requirements in the Standard is carried out twice a year by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance and the business is issued with a certificate to demonstrate this compliance.
Strategic Environment Assessment
An Environmental and Sustainability Report was published by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) as part of their Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). Specific environmental information has been collated for the Sellafield site for inclusion in the Report. This information will be used in the preparation of the Environmental and Sustainability Report.
More details are available on the NDA website and the latest Sellafield baseline report can be viewed here.
