More than 40 Sellafield Ltd employees took part in the largest ever European nuclear conference for young industry professionals – showcasing the UK’s world-leading expertise and opportunities in the nuclear sector.

The Nuclear Young Generation Forum (ENYGF), held in Manchester, attracted more than 350 delegates from 27 different countries and featured expert speakers, interactive workshops and technical tours to sites such as Sellafield.

The North West is home to the largest concentration of nuclear skills in Europe, with more than 65,000 people employed in the sector.

Sellafield Ltd was a key sponsor, and its employees delivered presentations on a range of nuclear related themes, hosted workshops, supported the organisation of the event, and delivered a science and engineering interactive workshop for 100 Manchester school children.

Sellafield Ltd Technical Director Rebecca Weston spoke to the conference about the challenges, opportunities and transformation of the company that employs 12,000 people in the North West. She said:

The nuclear industry is in a key period of its history as the world looks for secure and sustainable forms of low carbon energy generation. Meanwhile, there’s the vitally important work of cleaning up and decommissioning nuclear sites across Europe, including Sellafield.

It was fantastic for the North West to host this event which, through engagement with young people, will help to shape the future of the industry.

James Cunningham, a graduate trainee at Sellafield Ltd’s Warrington office who helped to organise the event said:

Our attendees gained so much from the conference, from developing their understanding of the industry, sharing knowledge and building a network of contacts, to developing key personal skills such as public speaking.
