The latest in a series of scheduled emergency exercises at the Sellafield site will take place during normal working hours on Thursday, May 4.
The exercise may lead to the sounding of the site siren, which could be audible to local residents around the site.
It may also involve activation, in exercise mode, of the automated telephone warning system, which is a free service available to premises within the site’s Detailed Emergency Planning Zone (DEPZ).
The system provides a warning in the highly unlikely event of an emergency at the Sellafield site and people within the zone can register at https://sellafield.registration-site.co.uk/
The size of the emergency planning area differs site by site in the UK, with consideration given to individual factors associated with each site. The Detailed Emergency Planning Zone for Sellafield covers an area ranging from approximately 6km – 8km from the centre of the site.
People living in the following villages are therefore eligible:
- Calder Bridge
If you live in the CA postcodes 18, 19, 20, 21 & 22, you may also be eligible for this free and valuable service. In addition, you can receive updates via text messages, e-mail and mobile calls on exercises that take place.
The automated system may be used in exercise mode during the next site emergency exercise, which will be held during normal working hours on Thursday, May 4.
This means that it would automatically ring members of the public who have signed up for alerts and a pre-recorded message will state ‘this is an exercise’ before informing them of the incident details as specified by the exercise scenario.
