Mighty clean-up milestone reached at Sellafield

Locked Vaults

One of the UK’s most hazardous buildings is a step closer to being cleaned up after Sellafield took delivery of the third key to its ‘locked vaults’.

The third of six mighty doors which will be the access point to safely lift out the contents of the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo for the first time, has arrived safely at the Sellafield site.

Gary Snow, Head of the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo programme, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team.

“It is a significant step forward towards our mission to deliver the ‘early retrievals’ approach which is leading to a simpler, quicker, safer and more efficient way of getting the waste out of this legacy facility.”

All six silo doors are expected to be installed on the facility by Christmas 2016, ready for waste retrievals to start in 2020.
