Sellafield Ltd has this week received the first consignment of nuclear material from the Harwell site in Oxfordshire, in the form of Contacted Handled Intermediate Level Waste (CHILW).
In November 2011, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority published its preferred option for the long-term management of this material.
It decided there was a clear and compelling strategic case for transferring the materials from Harwell to Sellafield for interim storage in appropriate facilities.
Following receipt of the necessary regulatory and other approvals, that process has now commenced and the first movement has been successfully completed.
The material was transported to Sellafield by the train operator DRS, which routinely moves similar material between other nuclear sites in the UK and Sellafield.
